Starting a Personal Training Business Part 4: Marketing and Advertising

Personal Training Marketing and Advertising

Part four of our starting a personal training business is going to discuss marketing and advertising your business.  Marketing and advertising plays a key role when you’re starting a new business and it can get pricey.  It sometimes surprises me how much advertising cost and wonder what the rate of investment (ROI) actually is.  If you’re just starting out, your advertising budget is probably very limited or zero.  Now depending on your business model, your marketing and advertising plan will very.

Let’s take a look at two different examples.  The first example is for in home personal training.  You would want to focus your advertising around your location.  So first, figure out how far you are willing to travel and what type of clients you want.  I would suggest you focus on areas of town where there is more disposable income.  Now that you figured out where your target radius is, let’s look at different advertising options:

  • Online (Google, Bing, Social Media, Craigslist)
  • Local newspapers, magazines
  • Flyers/Business Cards (place at homes and local stores)
  • Radio, TV

Our second example is for online personal training.  Your advertising plan would consist of advertising online but it still could be local.  You might only want to advertise to a certain demographic so you can focus on one area and spend your money wisely.  For example, target obese individuals or groups and look for online stores or hangouts to advertise on.

Now let’s take a look at 5 simple steps to start advertising.

  • Know your business model, demographics and location
  • Figure out your budget
  • Figure out your advertising outlets
  • Divide your budget up with your advertising outlets
  • Estimate how many people need to take action for your advertising to pay off

Later on I will go into more detail about setting up these online advertising accounts and give you some more examples that you may have not thought of yet.  The name of the game is to get your name in front of the most people in your target area.  It sounds easy but it can take a lot of time and you can spend a lot of money by making too many mistakes.
